The Moon and Sixpence is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham first published in 1919. It is told in episodic form by a first-person narrator, in a series of glimpses into the mind and soul of the central character Charles Strickland, a middle-aged English stockbroker, who abandons his wife and children abruptly to pursue his desire to become an artist. The story is in part based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin, who was a French post-Impressionist artist and now is recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinctly different from Impressionism.

威廉·薩默塞特·毛姆，英國小說(shuō)家、劇作家。代表作有戲劇《圈子》，長(cháng)篇小說(shuō)《人生的枷鎖》、《月亮和六便士》，短篇小說(shuō)集《葉的震顫》、《阿金》等。毛姆被稱(chēng)為英國的莫泊桑，其一生著(zhù)作甚多，除詩(shī)歌以外的各個(gè)文學(xué)領(lǐng)域都有所涉及。他一生創(chuàng )作了長(cháng)篇小說(shuō)二十部，短篇小說(shuō)一百多篇，劇本三十個(gè)，此外尚著(zhù)有游記、回憶錄、文藝評論多種。其作品特別是長(cháng)短篇小說(shuō)，文筆質(zhì)樸，脈絡(luò )清晰，人物性格鮮明，情節跌宕有致，在各個(gè)階層都擁有相當數量的讀者群。其作品被譯成各國文字，不少小說(shuō)還被搬上銀幕。他是20世紀上半葉非常受人歡迎的小說(shuō)家之一。
