This story comes from Waichushuo Upper Left Scroll in Hanfeizi. A man of the Chu Dukedom goes to the Zheng Dukedom to sell a pearl. He stores the pearl in a case, which is decorated exquisitely. A customer returns the pearl but keeps the case. The story is often used to describe someone who lacks vision and makes wrong choices.
